Rehearsal footage of the song filmed prior to the opening of the show in Stratford. Multi-camera, complete song.

Stratford-Upon Avon

February 13th, 1988

First performance in Stratford-Upon Avon, filmed by an in-house camera with a full, stationary view of the stage. Complete performance.

TV Teaser

April 1988 (?)

Bizarre commercial that aired prior to the opening of the show on Broadway. Those who didn't understand the staging of the show would doubtlessly be further confused by this TV promo.

B-Roll Footage

1988

Footage filmed for use by television stations for review of the Broadway show. Excerpts of "In," "Evening Prayers," "Carrie" and "Wotta Night" are featured. Betty Buckley appears in the "Evening Prayers" portion; an extended version of "Carrie" is circulating that combines the b-roll footage with a portion of the Broadway bootleg, which makes it a seemingly complete performance of the song. Footage of "Don't Waste the Moon" appears in reviews (below); unaltered b-roll footage of this song has yet to surface online -- that I am aware of.

Broadway
April/May 1988

Act One from one of the Broadway performances, which includes Betty Buckley. Filmed from the audience, it features a view from the left side of the stage. The second act was not recorded, as the battery on the audience member's video camera died.

It long been rumored that there is a tape in existence of both acts of the Broadway show. Allegedly Ken Mandelbaum, who wrote "Not Since Carrie" (see the Memorabilia/Print page), holds a video copy but refuses to leak it into fandom.

Joel Siegel's Review

April 1988

Taped from the evening news, a brutal -- but fun -- review of the Broadway premiere. Siegel was so chipper that it was hard to dislike him, even if you disagreed with his opinion. Though I must admit, pretty much everything he said about "Carrie" was right on the nose...

Pat Collins Review

April 1988

In case the screen-cap above didn't clue you in, this is another nasty review of the Broadway staging; Collins concludes by saying it ranks amongst the worst musicals its ever been her displeasure to view. Not nearly as fun as Joel Siegel's review (above).

"And Eve Was Weak"
June 10, 1996

Betty Buckley did a charity concert to raise money for AIDS research at Carnegie Hall and invited Linzi Hateley to join her. The duo performed "And Eve Was Weak," though I'm not certain if more songs from 'Carrie' were performed. I do, however, know that it was filmed and has wound up in the hands of collectors.

"When There's No One"
2007

In 2007, I came across a then-recent video online of Betty Buckley performing "When There's No One," introduced by an enthusiastic fan of the musical. Unfortunately, I lost my bookmarks soon after, and can't seem to locate the clip again. I know it wasn't on You Tube -- if somebody knows where to find it, please let me know.

"And Eve Was Weak"

Another performance, presumably from 2007, with Katie Pelkey as Carrie and Jordan LeGaux as Margaret. If there was ever a doubt that someone besides Betty Buckley could pull off Margaret's songs, take a listen to LeGaux. Wow. Fantastic performance.

"Heaven"

2008

John Moauro soulfully croons the song at Kent State University's Boo5 Theatre.

"Open Your Heart"

February 26, 2008

At the "Broadway Backwards 2" benefit, Betty Buckley told the story about being booed during a performance of 'Carrie,' and she was then coerced by host (and rabid 'Carrie' fan) Seth Rudetsky into singing "Open Your Heart."

Demos
1983

Sung by the authors.

Includes "Crackerjack," which is the original version of "Out for Blood" and "Once I Loved a Boy," which was replaced with "When There's No One" prior to the premiere performance in Stratford. The date cited by online sources is 1985, which is implausible.

Track list:
1. In

Workshop
August 1984

Complete performance of the workshop production, which was only the first act.

There seems to be a huge discrepancy in the date of release. The book "Not Since Carrie" cites this staging in August of 1984, while some online sources cite this production as 1985, others 1986. Some minor research proved that the recordings were copyrighted in 1984.

Stars: Maureen McGovern (Margaret White), Annie Golden (Carrie White), Laurie Beechman (Mrs. Gardner), Laura Dean (Sue Snell), Liz Callaway (Chris Hargensen), Todd Graff (Tommy Ross), Peter Neptune (Billy), Donna Murphy.

Rehearsal
1988

Main Cast: Barbara Cook (Margaret White), Linzi Hateley (Carrie White), and ??

I've seen numerous references to this but know very little about it. Some of the preliminary rehearsals for the show were captured on tape. I know for certain that "I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance" is circulating (it's surfaced on a bootleg of the closing night performance) but I have no clue if any other tracks appear on this tape. "I Remember..." is comprised of numerous rehearsals -- the track tops off at a whopping 18+ minutes.

"When There's No One"

Betty Buckley first released a studio recording of "When There's No One" on her 1993 album "Children Will Listen;" it later surfaced on "Betty Buckley's Broadway." Both albums are now out of print.

"Carrie"

Linzi Hateley, the star of the Stratford/Broadway show, released the title song on her 1994 album "Sooner or Later." Presumably the disc didn't get a massive release, it's practically impossible to find today.

"Carrie"/"And Eve Was Weak"
June 10, 1996

In 1996, Betty Buckley invited Linzi Hateley to make a surprise appearance at an AIDS benefit concert held at Carnegie Hall. Hateley sang the title song from "Carrie" and the pair dueted on "Eve Was Weak." Hateley later stated that the appearance provided her some closure that she never got when the show was prematurely yanked off Broadway. The concert was recorded and later released as Buckley's album "An Evening at Carnegie Hall" -- unfortunately Linzi wasn't present on the disc. It's speculated that the recording was omitted because the orchestra was a bit askew during their duet. Audience recordings on both audio and video have been circulating; video of "And Eve Was Weak" has also been leaked online.

"Unsuspecting Hearts"

Broadway Stars Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley released the song on their 1999 album of the same name. It appears the album is now out of print, but it's not hard to find.

Carrie the Musical: Memorabilia/Print

R.S.C. Souvenir Programme

Oversized program for the Royal Shakespeare's initial production of the play. Includes lots of behind-the-scenes, black and white photos of the cast at rehearsals, though the photos are oddly cropped and there's no photos of the cast in character. 36 pages (including cover), 15 pages about the play, 21 pages of advertisements.

For purists, the R.S.C. logo is actually placed further up on the program cover; I had to do heavy photo correction to the pic after I scanned it.

Broadway Flyer

1988

An early flyer for the Broadway run of the show. It's not unusual for these sorts of flyers to show up in lobbies months in advance of a production, which explains why Barbara Cook appears on it. Cook quit during the U.K. run and was replaced on Broadway by Betty Buckley. It's most probable that another variation of this flyer exists with Buckley on it.

Broadway Posters

1988

There are several variations of the poster from the Broadway version. The one above features the cast list, just like the U.K. poster, but it features Buckley's name and The Virginia Theatre. I believe that photo came from an eBay auction, and it was an oversized Subway poster (though I could be wrong). Another version is identical to the front of the Broadway flyer (further above), with the words "There's Never Been a Musical Like Her."

Playbill

The Virginia Theatre
1988

Playbills are a piece of theatre memorabilia that frequently survive and are highly collectible. They're given away at most professionally staged performances, and include scene and cast lists, bios, plot, and frequently, a page or two about the specific production, as well as ads and other stories about the theatre world.

The playbill includes one photo of Linzi Hateley and Betty Buckley. Two different versions exist: the one from the initial previews has a black-and-white logo, the one from the handful of official performances has the normal red logo.

Stephen King: Carrie

1988

Not Since Carrie: 40 Years of Broadway Flops

By Ken Mandelbaum
1992, 372 pages

Using "Carrie" as the mold for Broadway's all-time worst musical, Mandelbaum goes on to document the details of countless other "flop" musicals. 16 pages of the book (the first chapter and most of the last) are devoted to "Carrie," with 9 black and white photos, as well as the colour cover photo of Hateley. The book is out of print but can be purchased for reasonable prices by online retailers who sell second-hand merchandise.

My Name Is Love: The Darlene Love Story

1998

Oft-neglected songstress Love discusses her role as Miss Gardner in her autobiography. Apparently it's more technical information (rigorous rehearsal, her own weight loss, etc.) than juicy details about the goings on behind the scenes of the play.

Untitled 'Behind the Scenes' Book
2009 (??)

In May of 2008, one of original cast members from the RSC/Broadway staging contacted me and expressed an overwhelming interest in writing a book telling the story of the legendary show. Sorry, I'm not at liberty to reveal their identity at this time. No commitments have been made as of yet, but I have a feeling it's going to happen... and probably very soon.

Script - Work Draft

1988

Text script for the Stratford version which was once owned by ensemble player Scott Wise. Quite a few copies of this have sold on eBay. This version includes the dialog and lyrics that were dropped when the show moved to Broadway as well as "Her Mother Should Have Told Her" and "White Star"... but strangely, it jumps right from the reprise of "Heaven" to the final reprise of "Carrie," skipping "The Destruction."

(New) Workshop - Act 1
2006

This one is very iffy, but I have seen numerous references to a new workshop (most recent rumors say it will be workshopped in late 2008) and there are supposedly scripts floating around. This new version is said to bear more of a resemblance to the original workshop than what the Stratford/Broadway version became -- several songs have been dropped, new scenes have been written and "In" has been replaced with "Ain't It a Bitch," which was in the original workshop in 1984. In the past few years there have been countless rumors that the playwrights are working on a new version, so it's probable that's there's numerous scripts that are circulating underground. Here's the song list from the 2006 script that's alleged to exist:

Overture, Ain't It a Bitch?, Dear Lord, Unnamed Shower Scene Song, Carrie, The Light That Guides Me (Margaret), Eve Was Weak, Don't Waste the Moon, Evening Prayers, Unnamed English Class Song (Tommy), Unsuspecting Hearts, Do Me a Favor, Revenge So Sweet (Chris, Billy & Norma), I've Been Invited to the Prom, I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance.

.

Carrie the musical at Emerson College

Sometime right after the turn of the century (I presume), two unauthorized performances of Carrie the musical were staged at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Using the Broadway version as the jumping off point, this version was considerably reworked -- no glitzy over-staging, frantic choreography and ridiculously campy sets. The Emerson version featured one set. The script incorporated portions of both the Broadway and Stratford versions as well as dialogue from the script for the '76 film (including one pivotal scene that was cut out of the movie which replaced "Don't Waste the Moon" and was used to lead into "Do Me a Favor"). The "Apologies" scene was replaced with the film's detention scene; "It Hurts to Be Strong" was replaced with Stratford's "White Star;" "Do Me a Favor" was sandwiched around "Unsuspecting Hearts;" and "Heaven" played out as one long song that included the reprise (complete with Margaret White, who was cut out of the song after the Stratford run). And I gotta say, they got it right... almost.

While I have to applaud them for restoring the story structure that was so badly garbled in the Broadway version, there's one area where this version was still lacking: Carrie's telekinesis. The shattering light bulb during Carrie's period is absolutely crucial to that aspect of the story but was omitted. No library research on the word "telekinesis," no shattering mirror. During "I'm Not Alone," instead of making objects fly around, Carrie has a fantasy sequence complete with dancers. During "The Destruction," Carrie merely points and leers at her peers and they fall down dead. The one and only special effect (other than the bucket of blood, which was actually a hanging bucket in this staging) comes at the end of the first act when Carrie makes a cross fall off the wall. Once again, audience members unfamiliar with the basic storyline would be clueless.

Forgiving the T.K. aspect (and the fact that it has the production values of a school play), this version is quite admirable. You can watch the complete performance right here.

Carrie White Story

The forthcoming 'Carrie White Story' is another unauthorized stage production. The thing that distinguishes this from the other stage incarnations is that it's neither based on the films nor the musical -- it's adapted from Stephen King's original novel -- and the roles will be filled by actual teens, aged 14 to 20.

Directed by Sean Pollock, the show is slated to hit the stage for two performances on July 18 and 19, 2008 at the Darress Theatre in Boonton, New Jersey. Check out the Stage Hands Performing Arts website for more information as it becomes available.

Alternate Locker Room Scene

When "Carrie" debuted on CBS in October 1978, TV censorship was heavy. It was commonplace at the time for the networks to sub in alternate footage to replace objectionable shots and hire sound-alike actors to dub out profanity (often badly). Viewers got a major surprise when they discovered there was an alternate version of the lockerroom scene that didn't include any nudity. This version features white titles (as opposed to the normal red ones), several different shots... and Nancy Allen clad in a towel. This alternate opening continued to air on TV throughout the '80s but since television censorship has become less restrictive, this print has completely fallen out of circulation (just like many other beloved films that once were aired with alternate and deleted footage throughout the '70s & '80s). Major thanks to Ryan for providing this long-lost clip for the site:

A higher quality version of the clip above (.mp4, 41 MB) is available to download here.

There are two other versions that have also been seen. These days the normal theatrical version of the scene generally airs on TV with strategically placed fogging that blurs out the nudity. This version is the one most frequently seen on cable and network TV. The print that runs on A&E, however, is strange -- it's the theatrical version but they've added some light fogging and seemingly animated underwear onto Nancy Allen. Initially I thought this was the alternate scene but (as you can see from the clip above and comments below) it's not. Since this version airs less frequently, I decided to leave it here for posterity:

Gammel Hellerup Gymnasium Production

In 2001, the Gammel Hellerup Gymnasium, a high school in Denmark, mounted a musical production of "Carrie." According to info I've read elsewhere (which may be inaccurate), this was the only completely official staging of the show since it closed on Broadway in 1988 (though it's possible that there was some official sanctioning for the staging at Emerson College). An audio recording was made of the show, transferred to CD and allegedly offered for sale at the school. Apparently video footage of this show has also been leaked into fandom. Aside from the audio, I currently don't have any further information on this production.
